Background of the Study
Twitter retweet patterns in Nigeria have become a significant indicator of language trends and digital discourse. As users share and amplify content, retweets serve not only as markers of popularity but also as vehicles for linguistic innovation and evolution. In Nigeria, retweet practices reveal the ways in which expressions, hashtags, and vernaculars circulate rapidly through digital communities. The act of retweeting often involves modifications, such as paraphrasing or the addition of commentary, which can transform the original message and contribute to new language forms. This study investigates how retweet patterns encapsulate emerging language trends by analyzing frequency, content modifications, and the socio-political context in which these retweets occur. It explores how the retweet function facilitates the spread of neologisms, idiomatic expressions, and localized slang. Digital media scholars have noted that retweeting is more than mere content sharing; it is a dynamic process that drives language innovation through collective interpretation and recontextualization (Adeniyi, 2023). Furthermore, the study examines the role of influential accounts and viral topics in shaping these linguistic phenomena. By situating Twitter retweet patterns within broader sociolinguistic theories, the research highlights the interplay between technology, identity, and language change in Nigeria, offering insights into how digital platforms serve as laboratories for linguistic experimentation (Okoro, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the centrality of retweeting in digital communication, there is limited research on its linguistic implications in Nigeria. While retweet patterns indicate the circulation of language trends, the specific mechanisms through which they influence language change remain underexplored. Existing studies tend to focus on the content of tweets rather than the transformational process that retweets facilitate. This gap limits our understanding of how linguistic innovations spread and become normalized in digital discourse. This study aims to address this deficiency by providing a detailed examination of Twitter retweet patterns, thereby revealing the processes by which language trends emerge, evolve, and impact Nigerian digital communication (Chukwu, 2023).
